Bonnie – there are facts. Facts speak to truth. Opinions asked on expertise and grounded in data is the goal for advocates. There are no ‘alternate’ facts; there maybe data that conflicts with other data. Journalists search for data blended with expertise to make conclusions. Example: Walter Cronkite eventually travelled to Vietnam to see for himself that the war was a quagmire. He spoke with numerous troops and revealed the facts that the war was a doubious battle.
