And on top of that the electorate votes against its own interests. Government spending on social programs from medicare to food stamps are viewed as ‘taking money from wallet to pay for lazy people who don’t work or have insurance.’ I know that these folks often consider themselves ‘spritual’ but that stops at their bank account. Sadder still, the wealthy argue that they wish to CHOOSE WHAT THEY WILL DONATE AND TO WHOM (government is painted as a wateful villian.) So the message that needs to get out is that government is not, as Reagan smirked, the enemy at your door.
