For 32 years I remained true to the direct instruction method… to a point… that being once the kids knew how to learn from s story or how to construct a paper etc then I backed away slowly; all this depending on the student. There were time I literally had to read to them ( high school) for them to get it – be it mood, theme or irony. As soon as I knew they knew where the heck the wagon train was heading – then l let them hold the reins and lead themselves out of the desert. Ps try reading “Meetings at the Metaphor Cafe”
