Hmm. I disagree as a personal view. I cannot speak to the greater ‘voices in education’; however, racial issues remain a pivot point for the far far right. They seem to wish the horror of slavery could just be past off and that reminding students of these atrocities is un patriotic. Ironically, in my travels through Germany and Austria, the Germans insist on teaching the Holocaust, while the Austrian government pretends they know nothing about it and thus it is not mentioned in schools at all. So we as Americans have a choice to make: truth or lies. And at this juncture, that is a theme in our politics. Ps. Teacher Unions are a necessary evil in my view. It is the only way to negotiate with district officials who view teacher salary issues as a problem ( not to mention medical benefits). I fought to release teachers who failed to teach effectively or improve. As for me being ‘fired’ — that’s what my recently retired colleagues said (cynical I add) though they never really saw me teach kids.
