I wrote this letter to former Senator Al Franklen. After I penned it, I thought that these “Few Words” might be good company for millions of others…and besides, it has an inspiring finish — so here goes:

“My guess, Al, is you’ll never read this, but if you do, I know that you deeply care where America is spirialing…and it is a very dark place, indeed. So here is what this retired teacher has on his mind….

God, I miss you, Senator Franken.

God, I miss President Obama and Michelle.

God, I miss an America in which John McCain and Joe Biden could find mutual agreement.

God, I miss Walter Cronkite, a life-long Republican.

God, I miss the lawmakers who sacrificed their position of power for the greater good, and did it when it came to Obamacare.

So, Al, I guess what I miss is intergrity. I do know that there are other people able to make that great leap to leadership. I just worry that forces beyond the will of the American people could thwart them.

Atticus Finch told his daughter Scout that real courage is not “a man with a gun in his hand” — no, real courage is ‘when you know you are licked before you begin but you see it through anyway. Sometimes you win, Mrs. Dubose won. All 98 pounds of her.’”
