…d interesting elective classes, do work for the sake of learning, even if the grade doesn’t matter. The American system of rewards and punishments, however, suffocates intrinsic motivation, and we cannot expect students to all of the sudden turn on intrinsic motivation for a semester.

If a senior cares about what the teacher is teaching because the message matters personally, and the student knows the the teacher cares for the students PERSONALLY, then the issue is moot. It takes a wise teacher who has mattered ALL YEAR TO ACCOMPLISH THIS. And it takes a lesson choice that is poignant. As a civics teach in this current polarization, that should be quite easy to teach for and teach to.
