John first of all you have wondered all the right things to wonder about. I have been exactly where you are. Here are several things you may find out. You will eventually lose weight. School stress is really tough on teachers and the pounds creep. You will lower blood pressure. Lower anxiety. It will take a year to just settle down.
What will happen then? You realize you were in the giving biz and as a giver you will crave two things 1. People and 2. A cause. Take your time and be choosy. You may bounce from thing to thing.
Travel will become a new season, no longer lumped into summer with everyone else, spring and fall become fertile ground.
You will read. Nap. Repeat.
You may feel guilty for not doing something. That is part of fabric of being a teacher and always doing something. Don’t worry that feeling will likely last and there is nothing wrong with it.
And above all, know that literally thousands of kids have been affected by you.
Ps- when I retired improve “Meetings at the Metaphor Cafe “ about my teaching life as a fictional story. Whadda ya know— it was a hit !
