The corporate ( white) companies didn’t take long before they tried to ( and succeeded) in making this hip hop / gangsta music part of their ‘product’ marketing. Sprite ( the drink) was the first to say ‘drink this and you’ll be cool
Like these rappers!’ There was a fantastic documentary by Douglas Rushkoff called “The Merchants of Cool” that took a deep look at how the industry markets all forms of counter culture into a product line so that the authenticity of the music and the message is turned into just merchandise. I used to teach this for 20+ years to my high school students.
